Children With Asthma…Be Careful!

October 6, 2009

With the approaching fall and the threat of the H1N1 virus (Swine Flu), children with asthma are more at risk for complications related to their asthma. Left uncontrolled, a hospitalization could be in the future.

Help keep children healthy by following some simple steps:

  • Don’t cough or sneeze into hands. Instead, use a tissue or the sleeve of a shirt.
  • Wash those hands. Use soap and water, or if that’s not available, then use hand sanitizer that is alcohol based.
  • Keep your hands away from the mouth, nose and eyes.
  • Those at risk, like asthmatics, should get a flu vaccination as soon as possible. Check your doctors office or even select pharmacies.

There are also risks at home that can affect children. These are environmental triggers. Look out for:

  • Dust mites that live in your pillows, bedding and carpets
  • Molds
  • Animal dander
  • Smoke
  • Paint fumes
  • Beauty products like perfumes & hair sprays
  • Outdoor allergens like pollens & ragweed.
